Today I have had several people ask me the same question. Should they lift before doing cardio or vice versa? I know for myself (and once again I am not an expert), that I always lift before I do any cardio. This does not include warming up. I typically warm up about 5 minutes on the elliptical before any workout. Here are a couple of reasons why that I feel lifting is more beneficial when done before cardio.
- Weight lifting doesn’t deplete your glycogen (muscle energy) as much as cardio will. This way you still have the energy needed to have a great cardio session.
- Cardio (especially running and HIIT training ) is very hard on your joints and muscles. Doing 30 – 45 mins of cardio breaks down your body. As I stated in my first point, you will have nothing left in your tank for lifting. More importantly, this can lead to injuries.
This has been my rule while I workout and has worked well for me. I can remember two summers ago, all I did was cardio. I was injured every other month. It wasn’t until I learned the benefits of weight lifting, along with when to lift, that I began feeling stronger than ever before.
That’s it for today, but as always, I am going to be better than the last time. Have a great day everyone!
